INTEGRATION: DATA, APPLICATIONS AND SERVICES
How to Deal with Data Chaos
Leonid Chernyak
Existing data integration technologies sometimes are presented as a universal medicine for a disease called «data chaos». The potency of the «drug», however, directly depends on how the notions of data and integration are interpreted.
Centralization as the Basis of Integration
Vadim Kukharev
The larger the system is, the more difficult it is to manage. To grow business, banks increase the number of their offerings and information systems sales channels, so at some stage even simply accounting for all of them becomes a formidable task. How to manage all the products and tariffs? Does a bank need a single center, or the management tasks can be imposed on branch offices?
Data at Work
Sergey Gorshkov
IT departments rarely care about how to make the data benefit business. Income generating departments, in their turn, often underestimate the potential of IT for business problems resolving. The situation could be changed using semantic technologies for integration and analytics, allowing knowledge extraction from data silos.
Integration, the Russian way
Natalya Dubova
With application and data integration still being among high-priority tasks for IT departments, in the next three years more than two thirds of integration projects are to transgress corporate firewall bounds: integration increasingly becomes global. Russia joins the integration process, too, but local businesses have to address the issues in their own way.
PLATFORMS
The Fortunate Locality of Supercomputers
Vladimir Voevodin, Vadim Voevodin
Locality plays a prominent part when building efficient applications, whereas in exascale supercomputers locality is literally vital.
APPLICATIONS
Address Data Cleansing Explained
Konstantin Simakov, Ilya Kozlov
There is a perception that address data cleansing is a trivial task. However, this is just a mistake. In practice, this task has a strong relation with artificial intelligence. Trying to cope with this problem, we ought to deal with recognition, clustering and machine learning.
SOFTWARE ENGINEERING
Mobile Web Apps
Nicolas Serrano, Josune Hernantes, Gorka Gallardo
With smartphones being the primary handheld device for more than a billion people, mobile Web apps are a necessity in both technical and commercial fields. There are several approaches to developing mobile Web apps, but given the fast speed of mobile software evolution, in which the leading companies become marginal in months and new gadgets continually appear, it’s crucial to understand the basic technologies.

SQL and NoSQL: Successful Collaboration
Sergey Kuznetsov, Andrey Poskonin
Many different data management systems are available nowadays, ranging from familiar SQL-based solutions to completely new systems designed from scratch. Wide range of available options made it possible to choose one that optimally suits application requirements. However, one can benefit even more from using different solutions within a single application for particular tasks. This paper focuses on collaboration between traditional SQL-based systems and currently popular NoSQL products.
The Year of Cloud Databases
Andrey Nikolaenko
A cloud DBMS market, which includes as unique database-as-a-service offerings as also packaged software to build an own service, has been grown to a certain level of maturity, and some events occurred this year confirms that. Now is the time to classify the offerings and identify prospects of the market.
SECURITY
Using Big Data for Security
Valeriy Korzhov
Big data tools allow the processing of huge information volumes using various rules. The more concise the rule set is, and the larger is the data amount, the higher is the efficiency of processing. The security tools used with today’s complex information systems operate based on the same laws. In what ways can big data processing technology help in this area?
EXTREME TECHNOLOGY
RISC Reincarnation
Leonid Chernyak
The RISC vs. CISC debate that was raging in the 1990s was won not with a side’s technical arguments, but with the technology advantage of Intel, who simply turned out to be much stronger than the rest. Today, however, CISC’s victory does not seem so irrevocable anymore. The current mobile revolution gives RISC a clear chance to restore its previous glory.
OS GUESTROOM
The Coming-of-Age Period of IT
Natalya Dubova
Remedy Corp., one of the founders of the helpdesk and IT service management automation market, was merged into BMC Software in 2002. Remedy’s corporate architect and co-founder Doug Mueller speaks on ITSM industry as a whole and on current company products in particular.

Encapsulating Parallelism into Open-Source DBMS
Konstantin Pan, Leonid Sokolinskiy, Mikhail Tsymbler
The paper describes an approach to the development of the parallel PargreSQL DBMS for cluster systems by means of encapsulating partitioned parallelism into the PostgreSQL open-source DBMS. PostgreSQL is treated as one of the PargreSQL’s subsystems. The usage of PargreSQL is transparent for PostgreSQL applications and demands minimal changes in source codes. Experimental results show acceptable scalability of the PargreSQL DBMS.
